狗日的由來

不是中文的「狗日」,是英文的「dog’s day」

英文傳統說dog’s day是指北半球夏季最熱的時間段–大約是7月3日~8月11日。

很多人可能以為之所以用「狗」,是基於狗氣喘吁吁地走在豔陽下之形象。

但其實來自於古希臘天文學家發現夏季最熱的時段,剛好天狼星與太陽出現在同一塊天空。當時的希臘人甚至以為明亮的天狼星會增加太陽在白天的熱度。

14世紀拉丁文「canicular days」首次出現在Thomas Elyot編寫的拉丁文-英文字典。Canicula即拉丁文的「小狗」。
